    Wise Words From Vonnegut

    Hey guys!
The site’s been running really slow lately but I know that’s just because everyone’s busy with school and such. At least I hope so. I know I’m really busy.

Anyway. Perhaps with the slowness of the site, you guys are focusing more on your stories or maybe even your novels, so! I found this piece of advice from Kurt Vonnegut that I thought was funny and useful. If you haven’t read anything of his, go do so immediately.

    Eight rules for writing fiction:

    1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

    2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

    3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

    4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.

    5. Start as close to the end as possible.

    6. Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

    7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

    8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

    – Vonnegut, Kurt Vonnegut, Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction (New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons 1999), 9-10.

    Advertising

This is sort of connected to the previous post.

In addition to making the site better with your own personal effort, I need you guys to advertise so we can get a boarder range of role-players. Right now we mostly have Modern Fantasy and Gifted type stuff going around and I’d really like to have some more people who do Historical, Animal, Fandoms, etc..

We are all genre and it doesn’t seem that way at the moment. If you DO do something besides what’s on the boards right now, do not be afraid to make a new role-play just because you don’t think it fits in. That defeats the entire purpose of the site, really.

    So, go out and advertise!

    There is a catch!

Write your advertisement on Word or wherever before posting it and PM it to me. I will edit it and make sure I think it depicts Caeliria well. This is mostly just so someone else can read it through and catch spelling and grammar errors you might have missed. I don’t want anyone to get a bad image of us and I think a lot of people on Neo kind of hate us already.

Also, there are plenty of other sites besides Neo to post. I just heard of a place called InsaneJournal the other day where role-plays are popular and I had no idea what it is. So, if you do know a place that has role-playing, advertise there too.

AND. If you see a forum being advertised somewhere, go to it. We really need to start affiliating with other sites and I’m putting you guys in charge of that too. Same rules apply as with advertising, PM me a link and the form you’re submitting to their site. Most sites require a form to affiliate with them and you’ll have to supply that. Our button coding is in the Affiliate board.
For affiliating, I don’t care what sort of site it is. It can be PB, IF, whatever. It can be fandom, modern, boarding school, whatever. We can affiliate with everyone because we are all genre.
One thing that would earn you HUGE points is if you would put us on some of the RPG ranking lists.

Basically, you’re all working for the site in a way. You’re all kind of moderators. Let’s work together and make the site AWESOME!

If you have comments, post them here, in the cbox, or PM me.

    08 7th, 2009

Hey guys, I’m sorry to be posting this extremely bitchy blog post, but I’ve been really frustrated lately.

Caeliria is a place to grow, learn, and expand your horizons. It’s about being proactive. You don’t need to feel shy or intimidated or any of that. We’re laid back, we want people to have fun. Some of you may be here just because you’re bored and find that role-playing is a fun way to pass time and some of you may have a true passion for writing and love how role-playing helps you learn more about yourself and your characters. I’d like this site to be a good place for both types and, at the moment, I don’t think it is.

We have a very, very small group of great, dedicated users and I love them. A lot of them are moderators for obvious reasons. Then there are the rest, all sixty or however many it is. Most of you are inactive or just hang around in the cbox or OOC boards. Join role-plays or you will never become a member. Start boards, it’ll make us think higher of you. We don’t like bullying people but it’s extremely annoying to have seventy members or so and have most of them be not doing anything.

I’d like to give you an example of someone who started off not very good and with some very bad habits and became great over a very short period because she was proactive and wanted to learn. This would be Bree.

Here’s a sample from a piece she did when she first came to Caeliria:

“Just go hang out with that tramp!” I screamed in my boyfriend, now ex-boyfriend, Lucas’s face. He stared at me with a slightly amused look in his muddy brown eyes that stared into my teary caramel ones ( In first person, description of ‘yourself’ doesn’t work. The comment on his eyes is good; it has a negative connotation which works well.) . I could see people giving us looks, some people leaning over to others and clearly whispering about us. Lucas and I have had multiple relationship problems in our three years together; Lucas had cheated on me twice with his old girl friend, Abi. He told me he was sorry and that he would never do it again. I could easily be made guilty so I always bought his sob stories. Once again he was cheating on me with Abi. Abi was a pretty girl no doubt, but she had an ugly personality. She had straight silky black hair that reached her waist, shimmering hazel eyes, chalky white skin, and to top it off she had a coca cola figure. If she didn’t get her way she had to throw a tantrum and get revenge, whether is was big or small.
“Baby, plea-” Lucas began before my dainty hand connected with his cheek. I could see some other people our age laughing when they saw me slap him. His jaw was hanging down with a slight disgust as his face became mixed with rage, his eyes forming slits glaring intensely at me. He slightly raised a muscled arm as if to hit me, but lowered it. My face was twisted with pure anger.
“Don’t. Baby. Me!” I seethed through me teeth as I swiftly removed my lanky figure from Lucas’s company. My walk became a stride which became a run as I rushed out of the local mall we were in. Tears streamed down my heart shaped face covered in freckles as my flaming red hair blew behind me.
My shoes made a light tap on the ground as I slowed my pace. I was now in a local park that was a few blocks from my house. The park had a big field with trees surrounding it, and the park off to the side. It was one of the older style of parks that were still made out of bars and wood. I stepped down into the bark pit that the play equipment was in, and slinked over to the swing set. I sat down causing the old set to squeak. A gentle breeze blew my hair along my bare back, tickling me where my white halter top didn’t cover. Tear’s dripped off my cheeks, and onto my faded jeans leaving little wet spots.
“So what?! I’m still a rockstar-” My silver LG Shine cell phone vibrated as it sang Pink’s “So What?” I slide it open seeing it was a text from my friend Erika. ‘I heard bout u & Luc.’ The text read. I sighed, and rolled my eyes. Lucas was probably going around telling everyone how he broke up with me. ‘Wat did u hear?’ I text back. Erika has been my best friend since grade school. We met in first grade when people would always pick on me. I was a weakling, while Erika was strong and independent. I had my phone open when Erika replied to her text so I managed to avoid the sudden burst of music. ‘I heard that he broke up with u’ Erika replied. I sighed as I closed my phone. I didn’t feel like dealing with this right now. A light smile grazed my lips as memories of when I first met Lucas flowed into my mind.

Now, here’s a recent intro of hers from ModS:

The young looking woman continued to walk straight as all these memories flashed through her mind. Though, she probably shouldn’t call them memories. They aren’t hers so therefore they are just… clips of life scrolling through her mind, not memories. After all, it can’t be a memory if it never happened to you. But maybe her name is Emma, and she danced in the rain with some boy. The woman quickly lifted her hand and looked at the name scrawled on it. Pe-Penelope. She thought slightly disappointed as she lowered her hand back to her side. She isn’t Emma, and that wasn’t her memory of dancing in the rain. She is Penelope; but maybe someone wrote that name when she wasn’t paying attention so she would never know she is Emma, the girl who likes to dance in the rain, or Courtney, the one engaged to Kyle.

But then she could also be the mother with a son named Antonio. She stopped and turned towards a shop window. No, she isn’t the mother of little Antonio. Antonio’s mother had thick black curls and tan skin. She is Penelope with sandy blonde hair that is a tangled mass and she has peachy skin. Antonio’s mother also had bright brown eyes while she has deep set hazel ones. Penelope stared at her reflection, maybe life would be better if she was Antonio’s mother. A confident woman with full lips instead of Penelope who carried herself like a turtle while wringing her hands in front of her with skinny lips. She scrunched up her freckled, button nose and continued on her way.

The wind blew viciously, trying to make her cozy trench coat blow away, and expose her to the needle like rain drops that were slowly attacking her cheeks. She should be at home letting Mrs. Dessen comfort her and help her with her memory struggles. Not out her meeting some stranger. As Penelope turned the corner she stared ahead in distress. All the streets look the same. Maybe she isn’t heading to some strange address. Maybe she is trapped on one street, forever walking it. Whenever she turns a corner she is back at the beginning. Maybe I can go back and fool the street. Penelope thought as she stopped walking and began looking around. The same gray buildings, the same closed shops, and same dull colors; all hoping the drain Penelope of her color and make her part of its lifelessness.

She’s a wonderful example of everything we believe in and stand for here, everything we want to see.

Now, here’s some nagging for the people who are members: Why aren’t you guys posting ANYTHING in the Member Boards? They’re there for a reason. I think a big part of people not really trying in the Student Boards at all is because they don’t see anything to look forward to in the Member Boards.
    Start posting role-plays there. Really.
If this Student/Member system we have going is going to always be this ineffective, I’m going to switch back to just using auditions.

Also, the Cbox is not for chatplays and do not spam there. Try not to be an annoying twit, really.
I don’t like the way my site is being portrayed, sorry.

Please, I’d like your comments on this, whether it’s to call me a big bitch or to agree with me.

    Caroline out.

    Hi! Welcome to Caeliria!

To the left you will see our Cbox.

    Click the link “forums”.

Once there, register using the button beneath the main banner. It should say something like “Register/Log in”

DO NOT REGISTER USING THE LINKS BESIDE THE CBOX ON THIS MAIN PAGE. YOU WILL REGISTER TO THE WRONG FORUM.

    New Forums

    Hey guys!

As you might’ve gathered on the cbox, we’re trying to pull together some new forums. Here’s the basic run down:

    - The old forums will be kept under the Navigation link ‘Archives.’ You will not be allowed to post on them anymore. They will only be used to reference back to your new role-plays.
    - If you do not want to manually transfer your current role-plays to the new forum, just start the role-play again and link back to the Archives so that people can read the previous posts. If you only have like one or two posts though, I would suggest reposting it entirely on the new forum.
    - You will need to register again on the new forums. I’m sorry about this inconvenience but you’ll find that the site is a lot more user-friendly. Also, it’ll really help us get an idea of who’s active and who’s not.

Over the next few days, you’ll start seeing some drastic changes and maybe some really weird ugly stuff as we work out the layouts.

Looking forward to it! Yay for new forum!

    To the Mods:

    Hey, guys.

We now have two new mods, Sperling and Sshado.
Since we have quite a few mods now (Six, I believe), I was wondering if any of you would be up for holding meetings over a messenger. I don’t know what everyone has but I have YIM, AIM, and MSN. Poodle has MSN and AIM.
Basically, I’d just initiate a chat every so often so we can talk about the site and possible students to move up and really anything at all. I think this will help a lot in making Caeliria better.

Also, if you guys could flood Neo with our ads, that’d be awesome. When we start deleting inactive members, we’ll have less than forty members, I think.

Here are my contacts, please add me:
    AIM: Fattypigeons
    YIM: ForestxLights
    MSN: TwinklexBat@hotmail.com
E-Mail (if you ever have some questions just for me): c.e.nalle@gmail.com

    Hey everyone.

I have a request about the CBox. I would really like it if you guys would refrain from chatplaying on the CBox. It clutters it up and it’s just…really not the place for it. I like to read what people are saying, not endless ” *attacktickleswordfightmolest* XDDD^_^_^_^ @___@” things, kay? Or whatever. I also don’t think it puts forward the best first impression for potential members. Just, refrain, guys.

And now is the time for a shout-out/shameless product promotion.
Yesterday, I was at a store selecting a card to write Poodle a letter with and I stumbled across this company called Duirwaigh (doorway). They make cards, movies, art, jewelry…I don’t even know. I just know they’re really super cool.
The reason I promote them is because my theme this entire month has kind of been all about writer’s block and just LOOKING at the card I got for Poodle kind of inspired me. It makes me think of creepy carnivals and antique dollies and A Little Princess.

    Just, check them out.
    http://duirwaigh.com/

This is the card I got Poodle, I thought it quite befitting for my theme:
